Moving to Korea Checklist
Your first week sorted. Do these in order.
Day 1: Arrive & Settle
- β Get T-money card (subway/bus) at airport convenience store
- β Buy temporary SIM or eSIM (airport booth)
- β Get to your apartment, check inventory with landlord
- β Buy garbage bags at nearest convenience store (μ’ λμ λ΄ν¬)
Day 2β3: Essentials
- β Visit immigration for ARC (Alien Registration Card)
- β Get Korean phone number (KT, SKT, or LG U+)
- β Open bank account (requires ARC β Hana, Shinhan, or Kakao Bank)
- β Download: Naver Map, KakaoTalk, Papago, Coupang
Day 4β5: Home Setup
- β Set up internet (KT, SKT, LG β ask landlord which)
- β Learn garbage/recycling rules (ask building guard)
- β Find nearest: mart, laundromat, convenience store
- β Test all appliances (AC, washing machine, ondol)
- β Take photos of apartment condition (for deposit protection)
Week 2: Quality of Life
- β Register at local κ΅¬μ² (district office) if needed
- β Get health insurance sorted (NHIS)
- β Find English-speaking doctor/dentist nearby
- β Join expat communities (Facebook groups, Reddit r/korea)
- β Explore your neighborhood β find your regular spots
Pro tip
Your building's security guard (κ²½λΉμ) is your best friend. They know everything about the building, local services, and can help with deliveries. A simple bow and "μλ νμΈμ" goes a long way.
